What is IoT (Internet of Things)?

(IoT) Internet of Things is the use of network-connected information and devices (smartphones, computers, tablets, etc.) to facilitate and automate many processes and interactions. Applications are built on the concept of Interactivity, or the ability of an entity to gain, analyze, decide, and store information in order to affect the environments in which it operates.

Some examples of IoT have connected home devices such as coffee makers, refrigerators, and television; connected cars and medical devices such as pacemakers, glucose meters, and insulin pumps; sensor-based technologies such as meteorological and oceanographic weather forecasting; and fitness and gaming devices.  Advances in microelectronics, communication technology, in particular, mobile (compare mobile phones from the early 90s with today’s smartphones) are enabling extra dimensions of communication. Machines can effectively talk to each other over fixed communication lines and over the air, through mobile networks. People use these capabilities to improve their processes, ways of working, and to do entirely new things.

Some capabilities that are available through IoT are:

Mobile devices use embedded software, which allows users to play games, send messages, and receive information through the use of online games such as chess and checkers. Mobile Internet, provided through third-party apps, allows users to stream music and videos, and make and receive calls.

Online games (such as chess and checkers) that incorporate games for play in groups.

These applications rely on location data or information provided by a wireless sensor, sensor hub, or a “smart object” to provide an interactive experience.

Location-Based Services (LBS)

Location-based services (LBS) provide service providers with precise location information for applications such as fraud prevention and digital geolocation tracking. Typically, the locations are determined through GPS or Wi-Fi beacon tracking. This is typically used for advertising.

Micro-mobile

Mobile-based devices are used as personal information storage devices. This concept is being explored with a portable computing device with a microSD card, electronic paper display, and a battery that is small and portable.

Examples of Internet of Things (IoT):

1)- Smart Home Appliances

2)- Security Systems

3)- Home Controlling Hubs

4)- Assistants (Siri, Alexa, and Google Assistant)

5)- Smart Watches and Trackers
